Contrary to what you might think, it’s not all play and no work at the App Developers! Our Geeky brains were called into action yet again; when the team over at Just Lists approached us with a cool idea, we dropped the game controllers leaving Mario to battle Bowser on his own for a bit. As soon as we LISTened to what they had to say, we were excited about the game!

What is it?!

Just Lists tests your General knowledge to the max! Mixing numerous choices of quiz subjects with speedy and competitive game play to keep you on your toes. The game is being developed for iPhone initially.

How do you play it?!

Player one (that’s you!) chooses the first category.

Since the possibilities are limitless, this can be anything. Just as a taster; we picked Top 5 Box Office Grossing Movies starring Tom Cruise, Top 5 Goal Scorers in the Premier League, Top 5 Most Expensive Cars or especially for us nerdy types, Top 5 Games Consoles bought last Christmas!

Next, simply fill in your best answers on the blank list. Sound simple? You’ll see; thinking of 5 is actually quite a challenge! After you play a few rounds with your opponent and the score’s tallied up; the one with the most correct answers in the shortest time is victorious!

Do as many lists as you like, and when you’re dinner’s ready, or your thumbs are seizing up, simply post your winning score to your favourite Social Media site because Bragging isn’t a luxury; it’s a right!

Of course it’s easy to sign up or log in using your existing Facebook account, or you can challenge your friends or take on other players from anywhere around the World!

Here’s the geeky bit…

Design & Development – Ok, so once we could visualise the way it needed to look, we got our in-house UI masters on the case to produce their magic…

We were happy with the clean, sharp look and, as always the attention to detail was spot on! Now it was all down to the dev geeks to match the quality of the design in the development of the app! And they didn’t let the side down. We may well have stumbled upon a phenomenon in quick quiz-tech!

The App has initially been built native for iOS but we’ll be launching the Android version later this year.

Just Lists were suitably impressed and so we’ve rewarded ourselves with some extra playtime.

Warning: Just Lists is addictive, prepare to make and possibly lose friends!

Poker Battle is nearly here!

So we’re working on something super secret squirrel style… It’s a new style of poker that is set to take the country and the world by storm… It’s a highly addictive, fun and ever changing style of poker that is ‘pick-up-and-play’ for all ages and people! No two games are the same, gone are the 6 hour scraps with 8 people all taking waaaaaay too long to make their move!

The game we’re making is a full-blown 3D extravaganza, and as much as we want to show you everything now, we’re not, so you can have the branding as a sneak peak, and that’s it

This project is one all the geeks here at App Devs have loved to research, and it’s a full scale war each lunch time in the office… The words “Do you want a Poker Battle?” echo around the office more than “Anyone for a drink?” Infact, most people now have a Poker Battle to decide who goes to get the teas!! Oh how things have changed… We’ll keep you posted on the updates, and an expected release date.

We’ve turned things up a geeky notch and are holding our own Robot Wars style battle to the death. Sometimes we stray a little from app development, but we never stray too far, and we only stray in our own free time of course …

Given our love to build, code and make things move using technology we’ve decided to have the ultimate geek off and host our own Robot Wars style battle. So far we have 3 teams entered, and team SaBe Tooth is headed up by our very own App Developers co-founders Ben & Sam (you may know them from the ‘no photoshop’ image on the home page). Greg & Duncan, employee and friend respectively of the App Developers have entered a team each, and the rules are being ironed out as we speak, but they’ll look something like this:

1) The robot must fit inside a 0.5 metre squared box

2) All power must be electricity based, no fossil fuels (we care for the planet too)

3) The robot must not weight more than 5 Kilograms

4) No water based defence or attack methods can be used

5) Robots must be controlled by an Arduino board, either pre or custom built

6) The maximum allowed to be spend is £50 per robot

FIGHT RULES WILL FOLLOW

Keep up with the action on Twitter by following the #GeekobotWars hashtag or following the teams directly: @ActualSam & @HoganTheTwit, @DuncanLowrie, @Lukos86

The fight will take place in a controlled environment and yes, it’s a fight to the death, once a robot is immobilised, they are out the fight, and the other robot the victor! Keep checking back for updates, and please call 01234 834822 to book tickets to the final, hospitality tickets available, venue/date/time to be confirmed

Please email hello@the-app-developers.co.uk if you would like to enter the competition or find out more …

So, when transporting an iMac the other day, it had a little accident, well, someone had an accident between the sender, the courier and the receiver but neither will admit it! And no I won’t name and shame (yet)… So we had a couple of options, take it to Apple and get the stand and rear housing replaced, be without it for a few days, but know it’s going to be a great job, OR … Have a crack at it ourselves? So being the geeks we are, we took on this huge undertaking.

So you’d think it would be easy… Take off screen, take out the ‘innards’, place in new rear housing and screw it all seamlessly together … Well I’ll be honest, it wasn’t, like a hundred pins in the eyes it was painful… Piece by piece the ‘innards’ revealed themselves to us, over 100 screws of varying size, colour and type came out, holding some 50+ separate pieces of this beautiful machine together. Some bits being connected by 0.5m wire with equally as flimsy connectors, and other components of this endless jigsaw came out bit by bit, labelled and placed securely on the tidy trays provided.

At times we faced doubt – “Shall we stop?” “Will we ever get this back together?” … Yes we will! if it meant staying all night; with pizza & crate of Redbull, we’ll do this!

So with the help of a few App Dev friends, a little ‘Googling’ and some damn good screwing (not that screwing!) we got everything out, marvelled at the mess laying around us, and discarded of the old rear case…

Now – Putting it all back together. With a beautiful shiny new rear housing, a short Mario Kart break and some wotsits inside us, we regrouped to attempt the ultimate rebuild. What we stood and faced can only be likened to the puzzle we all know and love, yes, the 1000 piece baked bean puzzle (Classic!).

The task, led by Ben got off to a good start, bits were getting put back, screwed in and tightened, things seemed to resemble what we ‘thought’ they looked like before we broke the puzzle up in the first place, we were hopeful of a success, when …

3 Hours later, when it was all back in place, everything that had come out, was back in (baring 5 screws, but we’ll sweep them under the rug and forget about them). The screen went back on nice and flush and the job looked all but complete. So we flipped it over to put the stand on. Oh ….

Yes, it had happened (and if you’ve ever changed the stand on an iMac you’ll know what we mean here) … The little ‘arm’ that should be on the outside for the new stand to screw in to, had indeed, remained inside! The only way to get to the stand contraption on the inside was to take all the 100+ screws, the 50+ components and the 40+ connectors back off and out of the housing… No, forget it!!! There must be another way.

Nothing, and I mean nothing would pull this arm out, we tried everything… Until, we had a brain wave, nipped to B&Q (other home and garden superstores are available), bought some replacement strimmer wire and a pair of scissors.

If we could feed the wire through the 10 holes in the arm inside, we might be able to use that leverage to pull it out … Hey presto with one almighty tug, out came the arm!! We frantically screwed the new stand in, and the iMac then looked like any other.

Now all that remains is to turn it on. Which went a bit like this: Plug in, stand well back, draw straws to see who’s actually going to press the button, check our wills are up to date, and then he who was chosen PRESSED THE BUTTON !!! ‘Dongggggggggg’ the generic Apple startup sound was heard and the thing worked like a dream! First time. Like new. Well done boys, well done.

Finally we are in our office, we worked tirelessly over the weekend getting the place sorted, and looking beautiful. You will see by our wall we decorated it with style and class… AGAIN!

We’ve bought with us the Mario Wall, and increased it’s size and scope around the office, as well as putting a 7 foot wide logo on the Blue wall, and an Atari ‘Pong’ tribute on another.

So why did we move I hear you eagerly ask? Well it’s to accommodate the new rug, sofa, Nintendo DreamCast, fridge, beer pump, oh and of course the new staff!!! There’s 8 of us now, and there’s no sign of slowing down the growth and recruitment in this business.

We’ve got a new puzzle game, a quiz based masterpiece, an app we’re working on for someone which we believe could be the next Twitter, and something to help you all speak a foreign language! It’s all GO GO GO round here!

We’ve taken on some great projects, met some great people and we’re looking forward to getting sorted before Xmas ready for the break, if there is such as thing!

Bye for now!

The team is expanding, and we’re looking specifically for a pair of experienced (or willing to learn) Android hands who might want to join and be a part of the Geek family.

Mobile App Development is becoming more and more popular, and although we’re stupidly obsessive Apple fans, we understand the importance of Android and other platforms, and speaking honestly actually really love the latest updates for Android and want to get stuck in to it more with some of our in-house projects.

If you’re looking for a nice friendly, hard working, experienced Mario Kart playing, slightly overweight, Redbull drinking family to join, and work on some cool client stuff as well as what we call ‘C-W-A’ from time to time, then please get in touch. Email us on hello@the-app-developers.co.uk and put the email subject as ‘This Geek Needs Fostering” and we’ll be sure to get in touch!

iOS and Android are all welcome to apply…

Thanks, Sam.

We met with the guys over at Skinnydip today. You may have seen them recently on BBC’s Dragons Den.

They make iPhone Cases and some REALLY cool accessories, see more about Skinnydip here: http://www.lets-skinnydip.com/ (What an awesome name for a brand too!). The quality of their stuff is really good, and you can see them in some popular high street shops, so keep an eye out.

Anyway, we’ve got some really cool ideas for some mobile apps for these guys, about ways we can compliment their high quality designs and products with some fun and quirky mobile magic… We won’t give too much away at this stage!

I also kindly volunteered to be a ‘tester of durability’ for the iPhone 4s cases, as I’m well known for being a little clumsy… So my phone is now sporting one of these beauties:

It’s also apparent I need to order some for the whole family, as they like the ‘feel’ of them!

You can see the case on the Skinnydip website

They do headphones of all types, including inside Beanie-Hats and Ear-Muffs! As well as loads of other cool cases and stuff…

As you may have heard, The App Developers are being featured on a BBC show called Be Your Own Boss, which starts on BBC3 on 12th September at 9pm!

As much as we’re excited to be a part of a new and exciting TV show, we’re equally scared and worried about our performances in front of the camera, yes some people say we could be the next Ant & Dec (which we’re not sure whether we’re pleased about)… We do have fun, we do enjoy our work, but we also work hard… VERY hard, and The App Developers BBC experience was one of the most exciting things we have done in this business, and meeting Richard Reed and all the other wonderful people like Tim Campbell…

A lot has changed in the weeks since the filming, and I mean a LOT !!! the team is growing, the porfolio is growing, and our fear of seeing The App Developers on the BBC is growing!

Once the show is aired we will blog in full about our experiences, as we are under oath to conceal the significant points of the show…

A Great Read

Normally I’m skeptical about people trying to sell us advertising space, I’ve heard it all before, “It’s the last day for closing the month off and we have a last minute offer for you”, or similar stereotyped lines that frankly don’t really float my boat, given I’ve been tasked with such selling roles in my younger years I know the levels of fabrication sales people can lay over otherwise ‘everyday offers’… So when my phone rang, and a chap called Trystan introduced himself, I was already starting to switch-off mentally…

Something Made Me Listen…

I asked a few questions about the magazine, it’s circulation, the demographics and other stuff, and I’ll be honest, I was amazed! It’s circulation is huge, the readers are current, entrepreneurial, and exciting! So after some longer conversations, and a trip to Talk Business HQ which is a stones throw from the O2 Arena in London, and has a view to die for, we’ve decided to work together on a few things! So if you read the mag, expect to hear from us soon! And if you don’t read the mag… subscribe today! (They actually have a great offer on at the moment for subscriptions if you head over to http://talkbusinessmagazine.co.uk/)

Taking Talk Business Mobile

We’re going to be taking the magazine mobile, can’t give too much away, but if you’re expecting a simple page turning digital version of the magazine, sitting with a boring app, or newstand, you can think again… The App Developers ideas, passion and energy are once again creating something quite special for what is actually a quite special magazine!

So keep your eyes peeled inside the mag, and inside app stores across the world! Us, and Talk Business will be making some regular appearances.

We have started developing a beautiful application for HD Brows. Won’t give you all the details now, but it will be stunning.

We met with Nilam Patel & her team at the famous Milton Keynes salon: Dermaspa. The App Dev’s wives are frequent visitors anyway, and we have now partnered with Nilam to build to official app!

Can’t wait to reveal this to the world!

Shown the visuals to Nilam and the gang recently, and they were over the moon with the look and feel of the app, the development is moving along nicely and we’re aiming to have this out by the time the BBC3 show is aired…
