The good news is there are plenty of smart gadgets coming out in the next 12 months that will make a great addition to any home.
While some may well be old friends, advances in technology mean that many of these smart products are already becoming smarter.
Here are just a few things to look forward to in 2018.
The Even Smarter Digital Assistant
There’s plenty to choose from in this category from the Amazon Echo to the Apple HomePod and the marketplace for these devices is really beginning to heat up. Expect to see models that are suitable for on the road and in the office as well as more products from lamps and TVs that will work with the main players. But also watch out for feature packed new competitors such as Samsung’s Bixby Assistant which launches this year – there could be some really rapid improvements over the next 12 months.
If you’re stuck for space, how about a portable dishwasher that can also be used to cook seafood? There’s no water inlet/outlet either so you don’t have to worry about plumbing, there’s just an electric plug and your fit to go. Each load can handle about two place settings including bowls, plates and cutlery so it’s the perfect device for use in a small fat or bedsit.
Nokia Sleep Tracker
We’re probably more worried about our sleep patterns than we’ve ever been before and that might just be down to the monitoring technology available. If your Fitbit isn’t giving you the analysis you’re looking for, then the Nokia Sleep Tracker, which can be placed under your mattress, will monitor your nocturnal patterns a little more accurately.
Ecovacs Winbot X
Cleaning has become something a tech speciality in recent times. If you don’t want to spend your precious time cleaning the windows in your home, you can now get a robot device to do it for you. It’s practically noiseless and agile to handle any space, it has no wires to worry about and can get on with the job while you’re watching your favourite soap.
Aeolus Robot Butler
Don’t we all want a robot butler? While the tech in this area is progressing pretty quickly, we’re still not at the stage where you can buy a machine to do all your daily chores. The Aeolus has an arm that allows it to move stuff around and it can recognise thousands of different objects. It can even tell who your are. More executive toy rather than useful home help, it still looks good when the neighbours come round.
Smart Lightbulbs: Lifx Colour 1000
Lighting is another tech innovation that has taken off in the last few years and the products are starting to get smarter along with every other gadget in the home. The Lifx Colour 1000 may be a little on the expensive side but it comes with its own app and is compatible with a range of digital assistants, including Alexis. If you fancy a bulb that has 16 different light settings then this could be the gadget for you in 2018.
Nest Learning Thermostat
Smart thermostats and heating systems are becoming more mainstream and the technology has improved dramatically. Nest’s learning thermostat is able to learn from your usage and is designed to help reduce those energy bills. With a great design and modern look, it’s a little on the expensive side though the company claims you can cut your energy consumption by as much as 10% over the year which should all but cover the cost.
Ring Video Doorbell
Security systems and video doorbells are being advertised a lot on TV at the moment and the Ring Doorbell seems to be getting most of the attention. It’s easy to install and you can link it to your mobile phone via an app which means you can check who’s at the door even if you’re not home. A great little addition if you want to boost your home security.
Verdera Smart Mirror
Alexa is coming to a bathroom mirror near you. Verdera voice connected mirror can turn on your lights, tell you about the weather and play music while you’re getting ready. The lights can be brightened to your requirements and there are a whole host of other features you wouldn’t normally think of in a mirror.
Panasonic Fridge (On Wheels)
Finally, if you’ve ever been sat watching a box set and didn’t want to leave the sofa, this fridge on wheels could well be the perfect solution. Fill it with wine, beer or your favourite snacks and then order it with your smartphone app when you’re thirsty or a little peckish.
